Scriptural Proofs and Literal Steps to Leading a Person Into the Baptism

In the gospels Jesus breathed upon the disciples and they RECEIVED the Holy Ghost, at that moment they were born again

In John 20:22, “And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.”

This was the first time people were born again. Receiving the Holy Ghost within your heart means you are born again. Never tell the Baptists they are not born again.

The Holy Spirit came INTO them. The book of acts shows us a subsequent and different experience AFTER the new birth. The prepositional phrasing is different as well emphasizing the DIFFERENCE in the experience. The word UPON is used. The phraseology falling, upon, etc is used throughout the Book of Acts.

Acts 1:8, “but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come UPON you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."

The next MANIFESTATION or EVIDENCE of this promise of power is the baptism of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking with other tongues.

Scriptural Proofs of Speaking in Tongues

Standard rules of biblical interpretation state that 3 New Testament proofs are enough for a doctrine.

Acts 2:4, “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.”

Acts 10:46, “For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God.”

Acts 19:6, “And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prosphesied.”

This is enough for a doctrine but we continue on with Scriptural proofs. One of the best ways to preach is to just hammer like a lawyer with Scriptural proofs. It snags the mind and causes faith to arise in the heart and they don’t even know what you are doing.

Further Scriptural Proofs of Speaking in Tongues in the Book of Acts

Acts 8:18, “And when Simon SAW that through the laying on of the apostles hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money…”

Acts 9:17, “And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me thatyou may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

1 Corinthians 14:18, Paul speaking says, “ I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all.” (And he was talking to a tongue talking bunch.)

Further New Testament Proofs Outside of the Book of Acts

1 Corinthians 12,13,14 – Three CONTEXTUAL passages of the Book of Corinthians discuss the subject of speaking in tongues. Some of these deal with the PUBLIC SIDE of tongues, i.e. Tongues and Interpretation, however, no matter what denominational people say about this being the PUBLIC SIDE of tongues, IT IS STILL TONGUES!!

Jude 20 “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit…” Says nothing of praying in understanding.

Romans 8:26, “So too the [Holy] Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance.”(AMP) Soooo with regard to THIS IS NOT SPEAKING IN YOUR UNDERSTANDING leaving room only for a unintelligible language.

1 Corinthians 14:15, “What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the understanding.”

1 Corinthians 14:2 “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.” This cannot be speaking in your understanding.

1 Corinthians 14:14 “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.”

Mark 16:17, “And these signs shall follow those who believe; In my name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues….”

Benefits and Purposes of Speaking

Giving thanks well

Faith rejoices and gives thanks. 1 Corinthians 14:17 “For you indeed give thanks well…”

Healing, Righteousness

James 3:2,3,6, “If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.” “ Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us,and we turn their whole body..” “The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body…”

Romans 8:11 “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit Who dwells in you.”

Trouble with evil tendencies of the body, pray in tongues on purposes based on the above scriptures. Needing manifestations of healing, quote the Scriptures first that apply to healing, quote them until your head is convinced and then from there, based on James 3 and Romans 8, loose the Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead and cause your tongue to bridle your body and ride it into healing.

Love walk

Don’t try to love people with your natural ability. Feeling prone to resentment, unforgiveness, or just inclined to murder people who cut you off in traffic, then use the love that Jesus shed abroad in your heart instead. Jude 20, “But you beloved, building yourself up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, KEEP YOURSELVES IN THE LOVE OF GOD.” Remember also that your faith works by love. Jack up your faith and love levels by speaking in tongues on purpose around these scriptures.

Helper helps you to believe for ANY promise of God

Jude 20, “ But ye beloved, building yourself up on your most holy FAITH, praying in the Holy Ghost…”

John 14:16 - release the Helper who is sent to HELP YOU TO BELIEVE FOR ANY PROMISE.

John 14:16, "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever…”

Feeling overwhelmed about a promise of God. Simply quote the promise and then on purpose pray in tongues asking the Holy Spirit to help you, convince you and teach you until you slip into faith.

The Rest, Peace, and Refreshing of God

1 Corinthians 14:21, “In the law it is written, with men of other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people…”

This scripture refers to Isaiah 28:11 which continues onto explain the benefits of these other tongues.

Isaiah 28:12, continuing in context, “To whom He said, “This is the rest with which you may cause the weary to rest”, and, “This is the refreshing…”.

Praying in tongues around these scriptures causes peace to arise, causes you to sleep in heavenly peace for true rejuvenation, also, slips you into rest which is the gauge by which you can know you are in faith.

Become a Witness

Don’t try to witness, just pray in tongues and you saturate yourself with the Witnesser. You just will witness, be a witness, and others will be drawn to you. He MAKES YOU INTO A FISHERMAN.

Acts 1:8, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and YOU SHALL BE witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Also in portraits of disciples in Acts 2 and 4 we see them in subsequent infillings and they go out with signs wonders and miracles – Peter is suddenly and instantly changed from a backslidden cusser and maimer into a bold witness. He did not take a Tony Robbins course.

Pray the perfect will of God for your life everytime/Pray out mysteries and events that pertain to the overall plan of God in the earth.

Loose the only qualified intercessor who will pray out and process the plan of God ahead of you and then you can just walk it out.

Romans 8:27, 28, “Now He Who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know (then) that al things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

1 Corinthians 14:2, “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit HE SPEAKS MYSTERIES.

Whether the perfect plan for your life is spoken in your understanding or in a mystery, the important thing is that it is SPOKEN so the Lord can bring it to pass. You can speak in tongues on purpose surrounding these scriptures and the Lord will bring His perfect plan to pass. Also mysteries prayed out eventually become revelation that bubbles up to your mind.

Final Arguments

There are 4 contextual passages in the Epistles that speak on the subject of praying in tongues.

There are at least 30 isolated scriptures that deal with speaking in tongues and or praying in such a way that does not involve praying in your understanding.

1 Corinthians 14:15 “I would that ye all spoke with tongues..”

1 Corinthians 14:39 “Forbid not to speak with tongues”.

Do not forbid yourself to speak with tongues. Do not forbid others to speak with tongues.

Very Practical Applications

Throw tons of raw Scriptures at them. Put the pressure totally on the Word. Try to make the event as un-emotional as possible.

Throw out these partial Scriptures emphasizing WHO IS DOING THE SPEAKING AND OR THE SUBJECT GRAMMATICALLY of these partial scriptures.

Acts 2:4, “….and THEY began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance…”

Acts 10:46, “…for they heard THEM speak with tongues and magnify God…”

Acts 19:6, “…and THEY SPOKE with tongues and glorified God…”

1 Corinthians 14:2,4,5, - “ for HE that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men but unto God for no man understandeth him, howbeit in the spirit HE SPEAKS mysteries…”, “HE THAT SPEAKETH in an unknown tongue edifies himself…”,”I would that YOU ALL spoke with tongues…”.

1 Corinthians 14:15, “ I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding, I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the understanding” - the understood subject of these sentences is “I”, not the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 14:14, “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my understanding is unfruitful…”

Have the people come forward and line up. Tell them to lift their hands to God. Have them repeat this prayer or one similar out loud.

“Lord, I see from your Word that it is scriptural and it is your will that I speak in tongues. I thank you that in Acts chapter 2 they spokes in tongues. I thank you that in Acts chapter 10 they spoke in tongues. I thank you that in Acts chapter 19 they spoke with tongues. I thank you that in Mark 16:17 it says, “they that believe they will speak with new tongues”. I ask you to baptize me with the Holy Ghost and the evidence of speaking in other tongues. I thank you that I speak in tongues, I thank you that I speak in tongues, I thank you that I speak in tongues.”

Tell the people then to breathe in as deeply as they can, then exhale, and tell them to start.

At this point the doctrine of laying on of hands can come into play. It helps people to receive and it is a foundational doctrine of the church – see Hebrews 6. You will probably find that many will just start on their own. Instruct the people to not speak in English – as you see their lips starting to quiver and stammer encourage them in that, purpose via your own prayer language just to hook up with theirs. As you help them identify the utterance it will get stronger on them. Many will have just sounds. Tell them to do it louder – loud enough for you to hear it, tell them to pray into your ear, put your ear near their mouth. As they get louder they will get more articulate. If they are rolling their lips under or pursing their lips tell them not to do this. Many times they will not even realize they are resisting in this manner. You can even make a joke about it like, “Why are you rolling your lips under?”

Many will start yielding in laughter and giggling. You can acknowledge this as it creates further liberty. The laughter acts as a shoe horn to slide them into speaking. However just tell them as easy as it is to laugh they can just flip it over into sounds and or syllables.

Once they start keep them going for like 30 seconds, then command them to stop on purpose. This may surprise them and they think they can’t but make them stop any way. Then before they have time to think command them to start again. Their language will get even more articulate because the second time they start they are doing it even more on purpose and those more by gut faith and not feeling or loft experience. Once they start again, keep encouraging them, like “THERE YOU GO!! THAT’S IT!!” Make them stop and start once more and then move to next person.

Some people will have very strong and demonstrative languages. Its good to put these people on the microphone if they will let you. It amplifies the demonstration and the congregation will go wild and be renewed and encouraged to speak in tongues as well. Per Miss Lynette Hagin this is how they would always do it in the old days as it is in fact a demonstration of the Spirit and power.

Throughout the entire process the congregation should be encouraged to pray in tongues pretty bold and loud. It helps.

The people who have just spoken should be given some kind of literature to take home. Good items would be Kenneth E. Hagin, “Why tongues” book or you can even give them this handout and let them study from there.

Once the people start to speak, do not let them speak in English at all, (or whatever their known language is.)

Other helps from Kenneth E. Hagin’s book, “Baptism in the Holy Spirit”.

Tell them to lift their voice.

Tell them to speak out whatever sounds seem easy to make, regardless of how they sound.

Tell them to begin to speak the words and language the Spirit gives them, praising God with those supernatural words until a clear, free language comes. When that person can hear himself speak in tongues, he will have assurance and confidence that he has received the Holy Spirit.

(Brother Hagin gave the following commentary in the book, Tongues Beyond the Upper Room.)

“I have see people come to receive with THEIR MOUTHS OPEN. I haven’t seen anyone who would OPEN THEIR MOUTH WIDE WHO DIDN’T RECEIVE INSTANTLY. Once I saw 5 businessmen walking down the aisle with their mouths wide open, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.”

Don’t allow a confusing crowd around the people. Don’t let people stand around those receiving unless you designate people to pray with them. Don’t let people start yelling “hold on” or “let loose” or “flip the switch” or any other gymnastics instruction. If you do designate people to pray with people make sure they are quality as you don’t want to just have people laying hands on people hap-hazardly. The more firm, sure and orderly the process is, it will make for a truly spiritual and effectual experience.
